THE PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT GEORGE, BARROW

St George’s Church, designed by Paley & Austin and built in 1859-61 the north aisle was added in 1867. It was the first of the town centre churches to be built and was almost opposite to the railway station. Later St James, St Matthew and St Mark’s Churches were built as the town grew and the need for people to have a church near by to go to worship. Set on a hill if you go to the top of the tower you have a wonderful view of the town centre, see picture on the right, with the Town Hall and the tall chimneys in the background. The photo below was taken about 1900 looking along Church Street from St George’s tower.
