THE PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT JAMES, BARROW

St James church was the second to be built in Barrow, St George’s was the first. It was built to serve the people of Hindpool, mainly steel worker who came from the Midlands. Built in 1867-9 by Paley & Austin who also designed St George’s church and Holker Hall. The site for the church & the school was a gift from the Duke of Devonshire. The first recorded service was held in the school on Epiphany Sunday (6th. January 1867) at other times a service would be held in pattern shop of the Iron & Steel Works.
